THE ELEGANCE(!?!?) OF BALLOONS

Leave it to Martha to beat me to it. I was planning a post about how the most inexpensive decor element ever created can be used to create a uniquely stylish event if done right and woop, there is an article about it right there in the new Spring '08 edition of Martha Stewart Weddings.

This space from the Spring 08 issue was created for a wedding, and would be equally elegant and unique for all types of events from showers to birthday parties.

Use balloons to inexpensively fill an empty space or use the juxtaposition of the simplicity of the balloons against your more elaborately decorated venue.

I particularly love the idea of using balloons use as props for your photography...shown in the photo below by Jessica Claire. Why not hand one to each guest at an outdoor ceremony to release upon the announcement of "I do".

Yes, the balloons do look lovely and elegant. However, I hate to say it but they are terribly bad for our environment and therefore I would thoroughly discourage their use. Most specifically, please please please do not release them into the wind for mother nature to deal with. I know this would look absolutely beautiful but with marriage comes responsibility...beginning with the the wedding.

"Why not hand one to each guest at an outdoor ceremony to release upon the announcement of "I do"."

Because it is incredibly environmentally irresponsible. Animals choke on the rubber, or get it tangled around their necks. The material also does not biodegrade. Schools have stopped sponsoring balloon releases for this very reason -- stick with rose petals or birdseed!

I recently saw a wedding with tons of balloons as decor....I would NEVER have thought this would be classy, but it was absolutely adorable and beautiful.

I used balloons for my wedding and they were one of the best choices I ever made!

{TIP} Use fishing line instead of string to give them a floating effect.

I love balloons! I think people dismiss them for weddings but they can be so elegant and fun! We did a wedding last year where they had thousands of balloons covering the ceiling at the reception with their strings hanging down. It added a sense of fun and yet was done so well it was beautiful! Not to mention one of the less expensive decor ideas.

Latex balloons are not bad for the environment - they are biodegradable. The foil balloons are the ones that can not be released into the environment. Most balloon companies only sell biodegradable latex balloons.

I'm a huge fan of using balloons for centerpieces.. when you have a high ceiling especially, it's so fun to create the drama with very tall centerpieces that add a feeling of romance! What's more romantic than balloons? Love this :)
